I’m no talking about the bi-products in tinned or kibble dog food…and yes I do feed my dog raw food, i.e. chicken, beed, lamb and bones….so for all those who do know what they are talking about, and not those who say ‘oh my god, u feed ur dog raw chicken….’ you are more than welcome to your opinion, but more than likely I’ve heard it all before. If you’re niave enough to think animals don’t eat raw meat, google it. Type in RAW or BARF….
So back to my original question (lol), what animals can I feed my dog, we’ve just put her on raw food and she gets a meat raw bone every night. I understand about bones, meat, tripe, offal etc….I’m just wondering if there is anything else out there such as RATS, MICE…I found it on this website http://www.krisannriorawfeeding.com/thekrisannrioway.htm and then thought ‘well why not’ but I had never thought of it before, so now I’m thinking ‘is there any thing else I can feed her?
Ok so far we feed her:
Chicken,
Lamb,
Beef,
Kanaroo,
Chicken necks,
Beef and Lamb bones
Tinned tuna/slamon/sardines etc…
Egg yolk and finely ground egg shell (so it’s like powder)
and the occasional small amount of fruit and veg
So we’ve just realised mice and rats, too…a bit odd but I’m sure a wolf wouldn’t have thought ‘eww, i know I’ll eat a dead cow but I’m not eating that rat!’…chicken heads, leggs and feet etc….
We can’t get hold of any rabbit, or unfortunetly green tripe…so any more ideas …there may be some frozen animals in pet stors, that are mainly supplied for snakes, just like the rats and mice, that we are not yet aware of….
Please let us know.
Thanks Raw and Barf feeders

Pretty much you are only limited by what you can get your hands on, can afford and feel comfortable feeding. I know some raw feeders who don’t feel comfortable feeding one prey animal to another so something like alligator or say raccoon would be off the list.
A dog can eat any animal as long as the animal hasn’t been poisoned, just no weight bearing bones in bigger animals.
I give my dog mice as well, I get them frozen at pet stores.
BTW there aren’t many BARF feeders on here most of them are Prey Model feeders (myself included).
Meat’s meat….everything from mice to to elephant is made of meat. Some is just outrageously expensive……& NOT worth the foolishness.
& rabbit is widely available,dear.
Carina MacDonald, author of Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy For You And Your Dog said something one time about feeding anything that once had a face… I liked that LOL! I think your variety is fine… if you want to find other stuff to feed, that’s fine… but, I don’t think you need to. Looks good to me!
I feed: chicken, turkey, duck, rabbit, lamb, goat, beef, pork, canned fish, tripe. I supplement quite a bit, and do between 10 and 15% veggies/fruits. I try to do organs from a variety of animals.
Lol, there are MANY things you can feed. The question should be more along the lines of what they CANT (and that I’m not really sure except too much catfish or salmon can interrupt vitamin B absorption).
I actually just started breeding my own rabbits for myself and my 3 dog’s raw diet because I have found it to be the BEST whole prey item available, but it’s to pricey to buy on a regular basis.
Rats, mice, chicks and other small things are served to my cat and my chinese crested hairless because they are small enough to be consumed whole. Really, you can’t get anything more ‘complete’ than a whole prey item.
I do suggest, however, that if your choice of animal is wild or of an unknown source, you freeze for several days/weeks to kill any potential parasites. Also, if you do not know how an animal was killed I would advise against feeding as it could have ingested a poisonous substance you do NOT want to pass along to your pet.
As for greens… I don’t ever feed them to my pets. I feed them a strictly carnivorous diet as nature intended, and they thrive. Most predators in the wild do not consume the stomach contents of their prey except in small cases such as mice or rabbits, and even then it would make up far less than 5% of their diet. So I ask, why feed them a mashed up or otherwise pulverized meal of greens (as they cannot digest cellulose or physically grind themselves) when they get everything the need from a variety of at least 80% meat, 10% bone, and 10% offal or whole prey?
There are several really great raw feeding groups, but this one in particular I highly recommend. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/
You can feed everything except from raw pork. Because that can actually kill the dog because of an illness (Pseudorabies) that pigs can have and that is fatal to dogs (and some other animals). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudorabies
great idea with the rats and mice! mine kills rats but we take them off him because of disease, but if you’re getting them from a petstore then i don’t see why you couldn’t!
it’s definately a ‘why not’ question…
if the mice are already frozen i guess it’s ok, but if u have to kill them yourself it’s a bit cruel! i guess bagging and drowning would work fine ( i had to drown a rat in my sink the other day, it made me so sad! just a little baby!)
but that’s a lot of lives to kill for a good meal or a couple of snacks.
i live in china where people eat EVERYTHING but i don’t eat things like turtle of frog cos it seems like a waste of a life. u have to eat and therefore kill so many to get full.
so why not? cos it’s a lot of death for a little meal. at least with kangaroo or chicken you get a large meal out of it.
oh and to the person who said rabbit isn’t hard to get! lol, even here i can’t get it! i could get cat, but i can’t get rabbit!
your dog already gets a wide range of meat, you probably don’t need to bother with more. mine just gets chickens and fish (cos i can’t find rabbit or lamb, i don’t feed pork, and beef doesn’t agree with him)
personally, i don’t see any problem with it, and i’d probably do it myself if i had safe, already dead, frozen mice and rats available.
