What who be a good explination for a hundred feeder fish to die all at once?

by admin on August 1, 2010

We just bought a tank and about a hundred feeder fish, and they were in there doing just fine and we fed them, came back five minutes later and they were all dead. the pet store said they all probably suffocated but we think it has something to do with the food. any suggestions?

A combination of two things. First….lack of oxygen. Goldfish need well aerated water, especially with that many in one tank. The other is that you didn’t cycle the tank before adding fish. Also, if you didn’t add dechlorinator to the water, that’ll do it as well. But my guess is suffocation.

Maybe it was something in the water…

It could’ve been the food or there was probably something in the water.

goldfish are dirty which is what feeder fish are.. when they pee or poop in water it turns to ammonia which is poisionus to them. also if you just threw them in plain on tap water when you got them the chlorine probably killed them. food also had ammonia in it so hen you fed them you might have made it worse

could be over feeding, containimated food, bactiria in water, lack of areators in the tank, temp shock from putting in water suddenly without climatizing them to the water, clorine in the water

Ammonia. Depending on the size of the tank, you were probably desperately overstocked. And since the tank is so new, you didn’t have any nitrifying bacteria growing in it yet, so the ammonia couldn’t be converted into nitrites (which are also toxic to fish in very high amounts).

Take the time to cycle your tank first next time. I guarantee, your fish will live a heck of a lot longer.

New Tank? How long did you wait from the time you filled it up to the time you put the fish in? Feeder Guppies or Feeder Goldfish? How did you introduce the fish? You also don’t mention how big the tank is – that could also have a lot to do with it. Please elaborate more.

I can tell you this, there’s nothing wrong with the food. Especially if you were only able to feed them once.

Here’s a good explaination: You put a HUNDRED goldfish (Grow to two feet long) in one aquarium. Unless you’re packing a ten thousand gallon aquarium, they died of their water (all 2 inches left of it) being 50% goldfish waste and 50% pure ammonia.

your bacteria load in your filter wasnt big enough to handle the waste of 100 feeders is my guess. i would suggest acclimating and adding 25 at a time per day.

Yes you are stupid, 100 fish in on tank. What a idiot. You do not need fish, or any other living thing, for you will surely kill it.
